Welcome to Abbeyleix Further Education Centre

The Further Education Centre, Abbeyleix, Co. Laois, was established in 1991.  It is a Centre dedicated to providing adults with further or ‘second chance’ education and training opportunities.  The Centre attracts a very diverse student population and provides for a stimulating learning environment.

The Centre is part of the Further Education section of Laois and Offaly Education and Training Board.  The Centre is housed in what was previously the Vocational School.  This is a brightly refurbished building.  It is staffed by a director and twenty five full-time and part-time staff.  It operates in accordance with SOLAS and the Department of Education and Skills.

The Vocational Training Opportunities Scheme (VTOS) is the main focus of provision at the Centre. This programme offers a wide and flexible range of employment and further/higher education progression-focussed courses. It provides learners with a meaningful opportunity of exploring for themselves the learning possibilities available to them. Among the courses offered at the Centre are Leaving Certificate, General Learning Level 4 and a range of Post Leaving Certificate courses offered at QQI/FETAC levels 5 and 6.

Courses are designed to enable participants to raise their general educational level and also to develop specific vocational skills.  The Centre has created progression links with a number of third level Institutions.  These links allow students who have successfully completed their QQI level 6 programme advanced entry into the relevant second year of their chosen Higher Certificate/Degree course.

Abbeyleix Further Education Centre promotes a learner-centred approach and provides for a friendly and supportive learning environment.  Our staff are a committed and professional team.  We strive for excellence in all areas.  We pride ourselves on the support we give to our students, in their personal development and on their academic success, as they progress to employment or to third level education.
